El Centro, the Hispanic and Latinx Cultural Center at Virginia Tech, is now accepting proposal submissions for papers, workshops, and poster presentations for Virginia Tech’s first Latinx Symposium, March 21-22, 2019. Topics should enhance community knowledge about the Latinx experience in higher education. All subject areas and disciplines are welcome but should be specifically relevant to the Latinx and Hispanic community.

The deadline for submissions is Thursday, Jan. 24. We encourage you to consider submitting a proposal to deliver a workshop or a poster presentation. Please encourage your colleagues to do so as well.

Welcome to El Centro!

El Centro is the Cultural and Community Center for the latinx community at Virginia Tech. This is a safe space for all the people that identify themselves as Latinos or Hispanos, for the people interested in our culture, and for all our allies. El Centro counts with The Latino Library, initiated by a 2015 Virginia Tech Graduate School Diversity Scholar now hosts over 500 texts in multiple languages for all ages.

Creation of El Centro

Established July 2016, El Centro is Virginia Tech's Hispanic & Latino Cultural Center. You'll find community, resources, and kinship in 309 Squires Student Center. The Center holds up to 30 people at a time for meetings, programs, and gatherings. A 70” HD TV is available for entertainment and presentations.

Saving the dates

  • Comida y Comunidad - The first Tuesday and last Wednesday of every month at 12 p.m. in El Centro.

  • Hispanic Heritage Month 2018 - September 15 to October 15.
